Wholesome Beef, Carrot & Oat Roll for Dogs

There’s something deeply rewarding about watching your dog enjoy a meal you made with your own hands. For me, cooking for my golden retriever, Benji, goes beyond nutrition it’s one of the purest ways I know how to show love.

The first time I made this Beef, Carrot & Oat Dog Food Roll, Benji knew something special was happening. He hovered nearby, nose twitching, tail wagging nonstop. When I finally served it, he devoured every bite like it was the best meal of his life. From that moment on, this recipe earned a permanent spot in our rotation.

Over time, it’s become one of our go-to homemade meals simple, wholesome, and packed with protein, fiber, and healthy fats from real, recognizable ingredients. Whether you’re transitioning away from processed kibble or just looking to add a nutritious homemade option to your dog’s bowl, this food roll is a fantastic place to start.

A few years ago, Benji began having trouble with commercial dog foods. His coat dulled, his digestion suffered, and even specialty and hypoallergenic brands didn’t bring lasting relief. After several vet visits and plenty of label-reading frustration, I decided to take a closer look at homemade dog nutrition.

What I learned changed everything. Preparing meals at home allowed me to control every ingredient no fillers, no preservatives, no mystery additives. That peace of mind alone was worth it, but the visible improvements in Benji’s health sealed the deal.

This beef roll was one of the first recipes I perfected, inspired by other wholesome dog-friendly dishes. After a few tweaks, it became Benji’s absolute favorite and it’s easy to see why.

Each ingredient in this recipe is chosen for both nutrition and safety:

  • Lean ground beef (1 lb / 450 g): A high-quality protein source rich in iron, supporting muscle strength and energy. I always use lean beef and drain excess fat.
  • Rolled oats (1 cup / 100 g, cooked): Gentle on sensitive stomachs and packed with fiber to aid digestion.
  • Grated carrots (½ cup / 60 g): Naturally sweet and rich in beta-carotene for eye and immune health.
  • Steamed green beans (¼ cup / 40 g): Low in calories and full of vitamins A, C, and K.
  • Egg (1 large): A complete protein with essential amino acids and healthy fats.
  • Olive oil (1 tablespoon / 15 ml): Adds beneficial fats for skin and coat health.

As always, consult your veterinarian before introducing new foods, especially if your dog has allergies or medical conditions.

Step 1: Cook and Cool

Brown the ground beef in a pan over medium heat until fully cooked. Drain off any excess fat and set aside to cool.
Cook the oats in water according to package instructions and let them cool completely. Steam the green beans until tender.

Step 2: Prep the Veggies

Grate the carrots and finely chop the steamed green beans. Beat the egg lightly in a small bowl.

Step 3: Mix Everything Together

In a large bowl, combine the cooked beef, oats, carrots, green beans, egg, and olive oil. Mix until fully incorporated. The mixture should be moist and slightly sticky.

Step 4: Shape and Chill

Scoop the mixture onto parchment or wax paper and shape it into a tight log about 2–3 inches thick. Wrap securely and refrigerate for 3–4 hours, or until firm enough to slice cleanly.

Portion size depends on your dog’s size and calorie needs. As a general guide:

  • Small dogs (under 20 lbs): ½–¾ cup per meal
  • Medium dogs (20–50 lbs): ¾–1½ cups per meal
  • Large dogs (50–90 lbs): 1½–2½ cups per meal
  • Extra-large dogs (90+ lbs): 2½ cups or more per meal

Benji weighs about 70 pounds, and I feed him roughly 2 cups per meal, twice daily. If you’re using this roll as a topper rather than a full meal, simply reduce the amount.

You can slice it like a meatloaf, crumble it over kibble, or soften it with a splash of warm water for extra aroma.

  • Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
  • Freezer: Slice and freeze individual portions for easy use later.

To serve, thaw overnight in the fridge or warm briefly (10–15 seconds) just to remove the chill. Most dogs prefer food at room temperature or slightly warm.

For variety and added nutrition, you can occasionally mix in small amounts of:

  • Chia seeds or ground flaxseed (omega-3s)
  • Pumpkin purée (great for digestion)
  • Blueberries (antioxidants)

Introduce any additions slowly and always in moderation.

Every time I take this food roll out of the fridge, Benji rushes to his spot in the kitchen, eyes bright and tail thumping. Watching him enjoy something I made just for him never gets old.

This isn’t just dog food it’s care, intention, and connection in a bowl. If you’ve ever felt that same bond with your pup, you know exactly what I mean.

Disclaimer: Always consult your veterinarian before making significant dietary changes, especially for dogs with existing health concerns or allergies.
