Wholesome Salmon and Carrot Homemade Dog Meal

If you’re anything like me, fresh produce has a magical way of piling up on the counter especially carrots. With their bright color and natural sweetness, they were the inspiration behind this wholesome Salmon & Carrot Dog Food Recipe. I put this meal together after a trip to the market, and it quickly became one of my pup Benji’s absolute favorites. She licked her bowl spotless and then gave me that hopeful “is there more?” look every dog parent knows well.

This recipe creates a naturally sweet, nutrient rich meal that supports digestion, boosts skin and coat health, and provides a perfect balance of protein, healthy fats, and gentle fiber. It’s proof that simple, fresh ingredients can become a nourishing dinner your pup truly enjoys.

What makes this dish so special is the balance of textures and nutrients. The gently steamed carrots pair beautifully with tender, flaky salmon, and the cooked rice brings everything together into a soft, easy to digest meal. Benji always seems to know when a bowl of this is coming she can practically smell the goodness before it hits the floor.

Here’s why dogs thrive on this combo:

  • Omega-3–Rich Salmon: Supports skin, joints, and overall vitality.
  • Fiber Packed Carrots: Naturally boosts digestion and adds vitamins, especially Vitamin A.
  • Soft & Tender Texture: Perfect for dogs that prefer gentle, easy to chew meals.

  • 1 lb salmon fillet, skin and bones removed (fresh or thawed)
  • 3 cups carrots, peeled and chopped
  • 1 cup cooked brown rice
  • ½ cup water (for steaming)

Substitutions:
Use white rice or cooked quinoa if you’re out of brown rice. For convenience, frozen salmon works great just thaw overnight.

  • Large pot
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife

That’s all you need simple tools for a simple recipe.

1. Steam the Carrots

Place the chopped carrots and ½ cup of water in a large pot. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat, cover, and steam for about 10 minutes until very tender.

2. Cook the Salmon

Add the salmon on top of the carrots (or place it in a steamer basket over them). Cover and steam for another 8–10 minutes, or until the salmon flakes easily with a fork.

3. Combine Everything

Move the salmon and carrots to a large bowl. Flake the salmon thoroughly and double check for any stray bones. Add the cooked rice and mix until well combined. For softer meals, lightly mash the carrots before stirring.

Divide into four portions and let each one cool completely before serving.

  • Always check for salmon bones. Even tiny pin bones must be removed for safety.
  • Let the food cool fully before storing or serving warm food can trap moisture in containers.
  • Customize texture by lightly mashing the carrots or adding a splash of water for a softer consistency.

  • Refrigerate: Keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze: Portion into freezer safe containers and store for up to 2 months.
  • Thaw: Overnight in the fridge works best.
  • Serve cool or room temperature never hot.

For a summer treat, offer it slightly chilled or partially frozen!
